Infrastructure Services

Docker Containers

As container technology continues to take the world by storm, many organisations are trying to understand how to get started. There is a common consensus that container technology simplifies the consumption of IT services, however architecting and deploying an enterprise-ready, Docker-based solution requires a different skill set to those traditionally held by infrastructure teams.

To facilitate the adoption of this new technology, ViFX have developed a set of services that can educate and enable organisations, either through workshops or production deployments.

Container Services

ViFX architects have proven experience designing and running Docker-based infrastructures. Choose from the range of options below to best suit your business and technical requirements.

Container Enablement Workshop

This onsite, educational workshop focuses on enhancing your knowledge of container technology. This includes a discussion of the options, including VMware platforms (vSphere Integrated Containers and Photon) and Docker Native.

The workshop is three hours in duration and covers container fundamentals as well as elements of the container stack, including Container OS, Host Clustering, Service Discovery, Storage, Networking, Orchestration, and Security.

Container Quickstart for PoC Validation

A two-day onsite engagement delivering a pre-determined architecture specifically intended for pre-production/PoC validation of the container concept. Attendees will begin to learn the process of deploying applications into containers.

The platform deployed is a 3-node Swarm Cluster running PhotonOS, with a separate combined Swarm Management and Service Discovery Node (non-redundant), VXLAN Network overlay, configured with container persistent volumes on local disks.

The engagement consists of four phases:

  1. Discovery Interview - prior to attending site, ViFX architects will conduct a telephone-based discovery interview to gain an understanding of the business objectives for deploying container technology, as well as discuss pre-requisites for VMs and networking.
  2. Design - ViFX architects will provide a Design Specification detailing the installation settings that will be used during the implementation phase.
  3. Implement - ViFX architects will implement the platform components and confirm operation per the design and implementation plan.
  4. Enable - A comprehensive walkthrough of the environment will be delivered that will convey lessons learned from similar deployments. We'll provide demonstrations on how to deploy containers onto the new platform, including attaching to the overlay network and storing data in a persistent volume.

Container Accelerator for Production Deployments

A five-day onsite engagement delivering a pre-determined architecture designed by ViFX in accordance with best practices for production deployments.

The platform deployed is a 5-node Swarm Cluster running PhotonOS, with a separate 3-node Swarm Management and Service Discovery Cluster (fully redundant), VXLAN Network overlay, and configured with container persistent volumes mounted to external storage through NFS/Gluster/Flocker.

The engagement consists of five phases:

  1. Interactive Workshop - prior to commencing the deployment, ViFX architects will complete a half day onsite workshop with you to gain an understanding of the business objectives for deploying container technology, as well as discuss pre-requisites for VMs, storage, and networking.
  2. DesignViFX architects will provide a Design Specification detailing the installation settings that will be used during the implementation phase.
  5. Functional Testing - ViFX will demonstrate the container restart/recovery mechanisms available in Swarm and how the platform can automatically and transparently recover from failures in Swarm nodes, Management nodes, or Service Discovery nodes.

Advisory Service

This is a pre-paid service that provides direct access to an experienced ViFX architect who is versed in VMware and Docker technologies. The architect is available to offer advice and guidance, including:

  • Architectural guidance, including solution reviews, implementation guidance, and lifecycle planning.
  • Access and advocacy, including specialist engagements, product enhancements, and special access programs.
  • Strategic support, including strategic support cases, preventative notifications, and extensive remote and onsite engagement.
