The introduction of virtualisation as a mainstream production technology has enabled a range of flexible, creative approaches to the challenges faced in operating an IT infrastructure. Innovative and low cost approaches have been enabled in areas such as remote location of IT Infrastructure (co-location) and virtualised disaster recovery (v-dr).
This is specifically for customers looking to either take advantage of the benefits of virtualisation in an incremental, low cost fashion, or to achieve rapid low cost disaster recovery of their virtualised environment. The platform can either be used as a basis for hosting production virtual machines or leveraging replication technologies to provide a virtual DR environment for existing virtual systems.
The platform has been specifically designed for virtualised servers using VMware ESX Enterprise and IBM enterprise grade hardware. A rigorous design process, combined with ViFX experience and expertise has ensured the highest standards in stability and availability.
The optional high availability feature, automatically replicates all hosted virtual machines (or those nominated) to alternate isolated servers and storage. This allows the entire production hosting platform to experience a failure, with minimal service interruption.
The production data centre has connections to multiple network providers including Vector, Telecom, CityLink, and TelstraClear optical networks. Redundant routing, data centre security and EAL4+ security means that the hosted facility ranks as one of the most secure and reliable hosting environments available.
The Run-Live service operates by replicating entire virtual machine files over a secure high bandwidth connection to the ViFX remote infrastructure platform. Replication occurs on an agreed schedule, and is an automatic, background process.
In the event of a production system outage, ViFX will enable the virtual machines at the DR site, enabling normal processing to resume, generally within minutes.
This service operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week (including Public Holidays) and is activated by nationwide 0800 service.
The Run-Live service supports a 30 minute response time. The time taken for an environment to become fully operational will be determined by individual client requirements and server priority considerations.
The VDR system may be tested (“fire drill”) as required.
The charges for the Run Live VDR service are made up from a combination of a base charge plus a charge per virtual machine. Other fees will apply depending upon the individual requirements of the client.
Virtual co-location is available on a per virtual machine basis. This enables clients to acquire as much or as little compute resource as required to ensure system performance. Resources may be added or removed from a virtual machine to optimise performance and cost.
All VM’s are able to (optionally) take advantage of the sophisticated reliability features of VMware’s market leading VI3 Enterprise environment to ensure maximum availability at the lowest possible cost. This includes full VM back up and off site tape storage.
